An upcoming 30 room hotel in Ooty for the Ayatana brand, this project is around 33000 sft of built area. The direction to the design was greatly influenced by the past context of the place as is evident from the built forms throughout. At the same time there is a conscious design to keep the language modern and contemporary.
The material palette for the architecture is of high contrast in both colour and texture. The interior shell is muted but accentuated with rich materials for warmth and luxury. This is seen above in the Reception block, with a sizeable lobby, waiting and merchandising area.
The Restaurant block; Visible are the two entry levels with the top that enters into a small lobby, a restaurant and bar while the bottom leads to the banquet, recreation and pool area. These levels are connected internally through a double height courtyard enabling a seamless experience of all spaces.
The Ayatana in coorg utilizes the logo and it's derivatives to establish continuity throughout the project. A similar exercise in this design was borne out of an observation on site (explained above). The spatial graphic does the work of tying the spaces together with an added advantage of strengthening brand recall.
The large volume created by the A shaped form make a grand statement for entry into the public areas. This is coupled with landscape features to be more inviting and cozy to the user.
The bar is an homage to the colonial heritage of the place, with a lot of vintage elements co-existing with modern flourishes.
The restaurant is a fairly large open floor, flanked by the buffet and live counters to one side and the covered balcony space with alfresco on the other.
The lower level of the restaurant block opens out to a view of the large infinity pool and an outdoor deck. The connecting double height space includes the staircase to the upper level and the recreation room. There is also a sizable banquet/conference hall that utilizes the space as well.
The heart of any hospitality project are the rooms, where guests spend the most amount of time. The living units have been designed luxuriously, with individual fireplaces and wooden flooring for warmth in the cold of Ooty. The built forms of the cottages are in line with the overall design language of the resort.
